Geography

The oblast extends 220 km in the north-south direction from 53°30' to 55°30' N and 220 km in east-west, with a total area of 29,900 km2.

Relief, geological structure, and minerology

The region lies between the Smolensk-Moscow and Central Russian Upland and the Dneprovsko-Desna province. The Baryatinsko-Sukhinichi Uplands, located in the center of the oblast, were eroded and resurfaced by glacial activity. In the west, the Spas-Demenskij ridge stands out against the glacial plain. Further south lie raised outwash plains which form a part of the Bryansk-Zhizdrin woodlands.

Kaluga Oblast lies in the center of the East European craton. The thickness of the upper, sedimentary layer ranges from 400-500 m in the south to 1000-1400 m in the north. A large part of this sediment was deposited in the Devonian period; in the south, over 80% of the sediments, including those from the Quaternary period were deposited during that time.

The land contains significant stores (220 million m3) of fire clay and refractory clay, raw material for glass-making (11.6 million tons), and phosphates (94.7 million tons of ore, 7.5 million of which is P2O5).

Fauna

Common wildlife in Kaluga Oblast includes moose, boars, wolves, foxes, hares, squirrels, mink, weasels, and others. Common birds are grouse, quail, snipes, and woodpeckers. Fish include dace, chub, ide, rudd, tench, esox and wels catfish.

History

It was created in 1944 out of four other oblasts: Moskva Oblast, Orel Oblast, Smolensk Oblast, and Tula Oblast. It is located at the historical region of the former Kaluga Governorate.
